THE KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF CONTRACEPTION AMONG MALE ADOLESCENTS (CASE STUDY, KOGI STATE)
ABSTRACT
The study investigates the knowledge and practice of contraception among male adolescents in Kogi State, Nigeria. With an increasing awareness of the importance of reproductive health education, this research seeks to explore the level of understanding and utilization of contraception methods among male adolescents, considering the socio-cultural context of Kogi State. A mixed-methods approach, combining surveys and in-depth interviews, will be employed to collect data from a representative sample of male adolescents aged 15 to 19 years.
The quantitative phase involves a structured survey questionnaire designed to assess the participants’ knowledge of various contraceptive methods, sources of information, and the prevalence of contraceptive use. Additionally, the qualitative phase employs in-depth interviews to gain insights into the socio-cultural factors influencing contraceptive knowledge and practices among male adolescents. The interviews will explore perceptions, attitudes, and the impact of cultural norms on contraceptive decision-making.
Findings from this study aim to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on adolescent reproductive health in Nigeria, specifically shedding light on the often-overlooked perspective of male adolescents. The research outcomes may inform targeted interventions and educational programs aimed at enhancing the reproductive health literacy of male adolescents, ultimately contributing to the reduction of unintended pregnancies and promoting responsible sexual behavior in the region.
