Uneasy Silence In Rivers Over Okowa As Atiku’s Running Mate

The emergence of Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, as running mate to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has caused unusual quietness in Rivers State.

Most stakeholders of the PDP in the State were said to be disappointed at the last- minute horse trading that produced Okowa ahead of Governor Nyesom Wike.

The Government House and PDP leaders on Wednesday celebrated reports that Wike had been recommended by the PDP’s Advisory Committee as a running mate having reportedly won 16 votes to defeat Okowa, who got only three votes.

But they were said to have felt embarrassed that despite the recommendation of the committee, the PDP and Atiku settled for Okowa.

They were said to have wondered the rationale behind setting up the committee if Atiku and some PDP leaders had wanted to pick Okowa.

Immediately report of Okowa filtered into the the State and all PDP leaders, stakeholders wore long faces refusing to speak on the matter.

Most of them were scared to speak on the matter as Wike had yet to officially declare his next move.

Rivers PDP Publicity Secretary, Tambari Sydney, said the national leadership of the party would handle the development.
