REMOVAL OF NITRATE FROM GROUND WATER

Abstract

Groundwater contamination by nitrate is a growing environmental and public health concern, particularly in areas with intensive agricultural practices and improper waste management. Elevated levels of nitrate in drinking water pose significant health risks, including methemoglobinemia or “blue baby syndrome” and other long-term health effects. This study investigates the removal of nitrate from groundwater using a variety of treatment methods, with the aim of identifying the most effective and sustainable approach. Various physical, chemical, and biological techniques, including ion exchange, reverse osmosis, and denitrification, were evaluated based on their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact.

The experimental analysis was conducted using groundwater samples collected from nitrate-contaminated regions. The performance of each method was assessed by monitoring nitrate reduction, operational challenges, and potential byproducts. Results indicated that ion exchange and biological denitrification methods showed the highest nitrate removal efficiencies, with reductions of over 90% under optimal conditions. However, biological methods presented a more sustainable and environmentally friendly solution due to their lower energy requirements and fewer chemical inputs.

This study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate nitrate removal techniques based on site-specific conditions, such as nitrate concentration, water usage, and resource availability. The findings provide valuable insights for environmental engineers, policymakers, and water management authorities in developing effective strategies to mitigate groundwater contamination and ensure safe drinking water supplies.
