ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL VICES ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social vices is a state of disorder because of lack of control. It is also seen as partial or total deviation from acceptable pattern of behaviour being expected from a person. School institution is a preparatory ground to empower and certify the requirement for student development, but unfortunately it has been found that social vices has become rampant among students in schools.

Social vices in school, especially secondary schools has generated a lot of concern, even the behaviour of secondary students ranges from casual to criminal which is affecting them academically, secondary students are found engaging in frequent quarrel, dressing carelessly, fighting one another, insulting people, bullying, lying, lateness, not doing assignment, stealing, drug abuse, smoking, sexual offences, examination malpractices etc. These acts affect their academic performances.

Akubue (1991) observed that the situation of social vices in school has caused a lot of problems with no position action to arrest the situation. He went further that social vices among secondary school students is a question to be answered by parents, the school and the society at large, because every child is born pure and children become hard when they start to socialize with their home, peer group and environment such as school.

Akubue (1991) viewed that social vices in our school today is sometimes a projection or maturation of what began at home. He made us realize that a child from broken marriage is very harsh, unhappy, insecure and frustrated to the extent of wandering about, idling, pick pocketing fighting etc. These acts that are imbibed will be taken to school and they influence others. This causes negative effect on their academic performance.

A part of social vices among students that causes poor performance in their academics, there are other noticeable reasons for students failure especially in Business studies.

Hallack (1990) opined that facilities form a cogent factor that contributes to academic achievement in the school system. These include school building classroom accommodation, libraries, laboratories furniture, apparatus and other instructional materials. He observed that their availability, relevance and adequacy contribute to academic achievement, otherwise failure.

Meanwhile Business studies syllabus is designed to allow students to develop knowledge and understanding of Various subjects. It is an interesting subject but the Secondary School Students are failing the course. Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) 2008 revised the curriculum on Business studies with the following objective to:

a.       Stimulate and sustain student’s interest in Various subjects

b.      Impact functional knowledge and practical skills in Various subjects to students.

c.       Prepare students for further studies in Various subjects

d.      Prepare students for occupation in Various subjects.

The reasons above have made it compulsory for schools and teachers to prepare the students to learn the subject very well. But is that so? Various subjects is the science, art, occupation or profession concerned with cultivation of land, raising crops, rearing, feeding, breeding of animal for the use of man. Various subjects is called science because there are lot of creativities and scientific thinking that go into the production of livestock and crops for maximum benefit. It is a study of science and technology that involves the practice of various subjects, it provides sustainable profitable and valuable food production.

Therefore various subjects is an interesting subject that involves the use of animal, plant and farm equipments as a real object in the practical classes.
