EFFECT OF STRIKE ACTION ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN BENUE STATE NIGERIA
Abstract:
This study investigates the effect of strike action on the academic performance of tertiary institutions in Benue State, Nigeria. Strike actions have become recurrent events in Nigerian tertiary institutions, often disrupting the academic calendar and impacting students’ learning processes. The research examines how these disruptions affect academic outcomes, considering variables such as prolonged academic sessions, loss of instructional time, and the psychological effects on students. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving both quantitative and qualitative data collected from students, lecturers, and administrative staff of selected tertiary institutions in Benue State. The findings reveal that strike actions significantly hinder students’ academic progress, lower motivation, and increase the likelihood of poor performance and dropouts. Furthermore, it highlights the role of inadequate funding, poor working conditions, and unresolved labor disputes as major drivers of strikes. The study recommends improved dialogue between the government and academic unions, increased funding, and the adoption of innovative conflict resolution mechanisms to mitigate the negative impact of strikes on academic performance in tertiary institutions.
