EFFECT OF LIMESTONE MINNING ON AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES IN GBOKO, BENUE STATE NIGERIA
Abstract
The expansion of limestone mining activities in Gboko, Benue State, Nigeria, has raised concerns about its potential impact on agriculture and natural resources in the region. This study aims to systematically assess and analyze the effects of limestone mining on the agricultural productivity of the area and the sustainability of its natural resources.
The research employs a multidisciplinary approach, combining field surveys, geospatial analysis, and community engagement to gather comprehensive data. Agricultural parameters, including soil quality, crop yield, and water resources, are measured and compared between mining-affected and unaffected areas. Additionally, the study evaluates the socio-economic implications on local communities dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods.
Preliminary findings suggest that limestone mining activities have led to alterations in soil composition and water quality, potentially affecting crop growth and livestock health.
