CHALLENGES FACED BY UNILAG STUDENTS IN NIGERIA

Abstract:

This study explores the myriad challenges faced by students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in Nigeria, shedding light on the multifaceted issues that impact their academic, social, and personal experiences. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, the investigation delves into the perspectives of students, faculty, and other stakeholders to gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges prevalent within the UNILAG student community.

The challenges identified encompass various domains, including academic pressures, infrastructural deficiencies, social dynamics, financial constraints, and mental health concerns. Academic challenges manifest in the form of overcrowded lecture halls, limited access to resources, and a competitive academic environment. Infrastructural deficits, such as inadequate facilities and unreliable utilities, contribute to an environment that may hinder the overall well-being of students.

Social dynamics within the university community, including issues of diversity, inclusivity, and interpersonal relationships, present additional challenges. Financial constraints impact students’ ability to access quality education, participate in extracurricular activities, and maintain a satisfactory standard of living. Furthermore, mental health concerns, often exacerbated by academic stress and societal expectations, emerge as significant challenges affecting the overall welfare of UNILAG students.

This study seeks not only to identify these challenges but also to propose recommendations for ameliorative measures. Strategies to enhance academic support, improve infrastructure, foster a more inclusive and supportive social environment, address financial barriers, and prioritize mental health services are discussed. The findings aim to contribute to ongoing efforts by university authorities and policymakers to create a conducive and supportive environment for students at the University of Lagos. The research underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing the challenges faced by UNILAG students to enhance the overall quality of higher education in Nigeria.
