THE EFFECTS OF LIDOCAINE AND K-Y JELLIES IN REDUCING PHARYNGOLARYNGEAL MORBIDITIES FOLLOWING ENDOTRACHEAL ANAESTHESIA IN IFE, NIGERIA
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: Tracheal intubation for general anesthesia may lead to traumatization of the airway mucosa resulting in postoperative sore throat, hoarseness and cough. These symptoms, though minor can be distressing and uncomfortable to the patient.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to determine the incidence of postoperative sore throat, cough and hoarseness of voice after lubricating the tracheal tube with either lidocaine or K-Y jellies in patients undergoing endotracheal anaesthesia; and compare the effects of postoperative sore throat, cough and hoarseness of voice, and patient’s satisfaction in the two groups.
METHODOLOGY: Ninety-two patients (ASA I-II) scheduled to undergo elective endotracheal intubation, were randomly divided equally into two groups; lidocaine jelly (Group A) and K-Y jelly (Group B). The tracheal tubes for Group A were lubricated with 2% lidocaine jelly and Group B with K-Y jelly. Patients were interviewed at the end of the procedures at 1, 12 and 24 hours after extubation.
RESULTS: The incidence of postoperative sore throat, cough, and hoarseness of voice when lidocaine jelly and K-Y jelly were widely applied over the tracheal tube are (34.9%, 25.6%, 27.9%) and (16.3%, 23.3%, 18.6%) respectively. Patients whose tubes were lubricated with lidocaine jelly experienced fewer disturbances of haemodynamic responses compared with the cases lubricated with K-Y jelly. The above differences were not statistically significant. The level of satisfaction was higher in the K-Y group. Age, gender and duration of intubation influenced the incidence of postoperative throat symptoms in both groups.
CONCLUSION: Though K-Y jelly used to lubricate tracheal tubes before endotracheal intubation reduces incidence of throat symptoms than lidocaine jelly, the study did not demonstrate the superiority of K-Y jelly over lidocaine jelly in these effects.
