VARIABILITY AND INTERRELATIONSHIP OF AGRONOMIC AND FIBRE QUALITY TRAITS IN MULTI-ADVERSITY COTTON (Cossypium hirsutumL.)

ABSTRACT

Twenty-five cotton lines comprising 9 multi-adversity resistant lines from USA and 16 F5 lines derived from crosses between the variety S295 and the multi-adversity lines were evaluated using a 5 x 5 lattice design with 3 replications. The analysis of variance for the nineteen characters measured revealed highly significant (P = 0.01) differences among the entries for days to boll opening, plant height, boll weight, lint percent, seed index, seed cotton yield, fibre length and fibre fineness while significant (P = 0.05) differences were observed among the entries for days to the emergence of the first flower and first five flowers in the plot, days to first flower on the second plant, number of nodes to first fruiting branch, indicating the presence of a wide range of variability in the lines evaluated. The coefficient of variation ranged from 2.6 – 51.8% for days to opening of the bolls and number of opened bolls on the second plant, respectively. The line (S295 x TX-CDP 37-HH- 1-83) 119(95) gave the highest yield of 938 kg/ha while the lines (S295 x TX-CDP 37 HH-1-83) 1175(95) and (S295 x TAMCOT SP 21S) 239(95) gave the best lint percent 43.3 and 43.00% respectively. The estimates of genotypic variance were positive for all characters measured except for number of opened bolls on the second plant in the plot. Broad-sense heritability estimates ranged from 1.75 – 90.74% for fibre strength and lint percent, respectively. Positive but non-significant correlations were found between seed cotton yield and plant height (rph = 0.299), height to first fruiting branch (rph = 0.288), number of fruiting branches (rph = 0.160), number of opened bolls per plot (rph = 0.343), lint percent (rph = 0.385), and lint index (rph – 0.374). The presence of wide range of variability in the materials studied could be exploited to improve some lines of interest. These lines could be used to make crosses which will eventually be used as a base for segregating breeding populations, from which single plant selections could be made into progenies, strains, lines and eventually varieties.
