VARIABILITY AND CORRELATION STUDIES IN SELECTED SUGARCANE (Saccharum officinarum L.) CLONES AT TWO LOCATIONS IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Eight selected genetically diversified sugarcane clones were evaluated for two Years (1993 and 1994) at two locations (Badeggi in the Southern guinea savanna and Uyo in the forest agroecology) in Nigeria. The objectives was to study the extent of variability and relationship between the various quantitative and qualitative traits for the purpose of genetic improvement. Significant differences were observed between clones for all traits. Important yield components like stalk height, stalk weight, number of stalks per stool and establishment count showed wide ranges in the magnitude of genotypic coefficient of variation. Genotypic components of variance for these traits also contributed more to be phenotypic variance. Performance data were also used to obtain correlations between the traits studied. Correlation coefficients obtained in all the important yield components were positive and significant except for stalk diameter and leaf width. The correlations revealed that stalk weight, stalk height, number of stalks per stool as well as the establishment count were the major traits contributing to cane yield. Since correlation only measures the mutual association between traits without regard to causation, path analyses which specifies the causes of the association and the association between traits and their importance showed that stalk weight, stalk height, number of stalks per stool had direct effect on cane yield. Stalk diameter showed its effect indirectly through stalk weight and stalk height
