EFFECT OF WATER STRESS AT GRAIN DEVELOPMENT STAGE OF WHEAT (Triticum aestivum L.) UNDER DIFFERENT LEVELS OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS FERTILIZERS

ABSTRACT

Investigations to find the effect of water stress during the reproductive phase of wheat under different levels of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers were carried out at Samaru, Zaria (Lat. 11° 11 N, Long, 07° 38′ E). Water stress was imposed during the flowering, milk, and milk-dough periods. Water stress reduced the grain yield by 31% when stress occured at flowering, and by 15.46% and 14.893′ at milk and milk-dough periods, respectively. The yield reduction occured through reduction in the number of grains/spike in case of stress at flowering, and through reduction in grain weight/spike in case of stress at milk and milk-dough periods. Nitrogen levels used were 0, 60 and 120kg N/ha. Nitrogen positively increased all the parameters examined, especially the vegetative growth. Most of the reproductive components responded significantly to only 60 N kg/ha. Zero and 30kg P2O5/ha levels of phosphorus were used. Phosphorus on its own did not significantly affect most of the parameters except the leaf area/plant and grain yield. However, the nitrogen-phosphorus interaction showed that nitrogen application without30kg P205 /ha produced little effect above 60kg N/ha. Application of 30kg P205/ha without nitrogen tended to have negative effect or no significant effect all but the yield of wheat crop responded significantly to the application of 120kg N/ha when 30kg P205 /ha was applied.
