THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION PROGRAMME OF THE NATIONAL DIRECTORATE OF EMPLOYMENT TO SORGHUM PRODUCTION IN KATSINA STATE
ABSTRACT
Nigerian economy is faced with two major problems – food insecurity and unemployment. National Directorate of Employment was established to alleviate the problem of unemployment. National Directorate of Employment had agricultural programme as one of its activities which could help in alleviating the problem of food insecurity. The commonest crop involved in the programme was sorghum. This study, therefore, focused on sorghum production under the National Directorate of Employment agricultural programme. The study examined the contribution of National Directorate of Employment agricultural programme in the area of sorghum production in Katsina State. Two categories of sorghum producers were involved in the study – National Directorate of Employment programme participants and non-participants. The study used 90 participants and 90 non-participants randomly sampled. A structural questionnaire was used to collect data. The data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and T-test model. The study observed that there is significant difference between sorghum output of participant and nonparticipant of agricultural production programme of National Directorate of Employment in the study area at 5% level of significance. The major problem faced by 70% participants was lack of adequate input at right time (such as fertilizer, seeds and insecticide). In order to improve sorghum production, farmer should be provided with credit facilities and there should be timely and adequate supply of necessary inputs.
