EMPLOYEE JOB DISSATISFACTION AND ITS IMPACT ON PERFORMANCE (A CASE STUDY OF KADUNA CONVICT PRISON)

ABSTRACT

Dissatisfaction is a psychological state of unpleasant situation, a state of uneasiness and

unfavorable condition. A state of dissatisfaction entails various factors that generally retard

performances. The individual becomes psychological alienated and depressed and in the long

run low performance. Dissatisfaction concepts like stress, Anxiety, frustration, industrial

conflicts, psychological and physical withdrawal were widely examined in the literature.

The research work equally examines various motivation theories like that of Abraham

Maslow, Fredrick Herzberg, McClelland, Adelfer, Blake and Mouton, Leon Festinger, Douglas

McGregor etc. Furthermore, advocates of performance and performance Appraisal theories like

Schermerharn 1986, Cummings and Schwab 1973 and Parter and Lawler 1968 were also

reviewed.

Prisons custodian, reformative and rehabilitative programmes like security, vocational,

recreational, educative, guidance and counselling/the roles of philanthropist, religious bodies,

voluntary organization and the government in achieving the noble objectives of imprisonment

were not left out.

Major problems identified in this research work includes lack of sufficient working

facilities for the reformers, dilapidated working environment, lack of incentives and poor

working conditions.

In minimizing the above problems, the study recommends the following solutions like

provision of adequate and befitting infra-structural and working facilities. Provision of enough

fringe benefits in form of allowances like that of hazard, medical, life insurance scheme, vehicle

and furniture allowances and better pay. The prison official training should also be enhanced

for better performances.

The researcher uses questionnaires and interview methods to collect the relevant data

cutting across all cadres of the staff of Kaduna convict prison. Secondary data were used to

buttress the primary source of data. Percentages were used to analyses the questionnaires.

Lastly, the researcher was able to recommend solutions to the findings discovered during

the course of the research. The recommendations if properly implemented, will in totality

minimize employee job dissatisfaction in the Nigeria prison service.
