COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND SOCIOEMOTIONAL EFFECTS OF LIVING APART ON NEWLYWEDS AND OLDER COUPLES IN KADUNA STATE

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to compare the socio-economic and socio-emotional effects of living apart on newlyweds and older couples in Kaduna State. Six specific objectives with six research questions were stated and four Null Hypotheses were formulated. Among the objectives were to find out the socio-economic effects of living apart on newlyweds and older couples and to compare the socio-emotional effects of living apart on newlyweds and older couples in Kaduna State. The sample size used for the study was three hundred and seventy (370) employed married men and women, consisting of 164 newlyweds and 206 older couples. Structured questionnaire was used in collecting data. A total of 380 copies of questionnaire were administered and 370 copies were retrieved. Survey research design was adopted for the study using purposive sampling technique. The population for the study was drawn from eleven (11) Local Government Areas in Kaduna State. The population for the study consisted of Eight Hundred and Forty-One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty-Four (841,824) employed literate married men and women. Analysis of data was done using frequencies, percentile and mean. Four Null Hypotheses were tested using two-tailed Independent T-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed significant difference for hypotheses three (3) and four (4), while a test of no significant difference in hypotheses one (1) and two (2) were obtained. Findings revealed that the most prevalent reasons influencing living apart among couples were differences in job location and career demand. Findings also revealed that couples living apart encounter financial strain in maintaining two homes and spent more on commuting to see one another. It was also discovered that socio-emotional effects of living apart leads to emotional insecurity and causes couples to spend less time relating emotionally to one another. Findings furthers revealed that newlywed couples are negatively affected socio-emotionally compared to older couples living apart. It was also concluded that newlyweds and older couples living apart suffer socio-emotionally and financially. Among the recommendations made was the need to educate young adults by Home Economist and Family Life Educator on living apart relationship before making the decision to live apart.
