Abstract
This study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the anthropometric and physiological parameters of Nigerian pupils of primary school age, focusing on heights, weights, blood pressure, pulse, body surface area, and respiratory rates. These parameters are crucial for understanding the health and developmental status of children, which can inform public health interventions and educational policies.
Data were collected from a cross-sectional survey of pupils aged 6 to 12 years from various primary schools across different regions of Nigeria, ensuring a diverse and representative sample. The study employed standardized measurement techniques and tools to ensure accuracy and consistency in data collection.
Results indicated a wide range of values across the measured parameters, reflecting the diverse genetic, environmental, and socioeconomic backgrounds of the participants. The average height and weight were found to be within the expected range for the age group, although regional differences were noted. Blood pressure and pulse rates were generally within normal limits, but variations were observed based on factors such as gender, age, and geographic location. The body surface area was calculated using established formulas, providing insights into the physical development of the pupils. Respiratory rates were also measured, showing typical values for the respective age groups.
The findings of this study highlight the importance of regular health monitoring in schools to detect potential health issues early and to promote healthy growth and development. The data also underscore the need for tailored health and nutrition programs that consider regional and demographic differences. This study contributes valuable baseline information for future research and policy-making aimed at improving the health and well-being of Nigerian children.
