EFFECTS OF NITROGEN, SOWING DATE, POPULATION AND VARIETY ON GROWTH, YIELD COMPONENTS AND YIELD OF OKRA (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench).
ABSTRACT
The responses of two okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) varieties (Local-1 and V-35) sown at two sowing dates (early and late, depending on establishment of rains) with 3 levels each of nitrogen, (0, 45, and 90kgN/ha) and 3 populations (22,000, 44,000 and 88,000 plants/ha) were investigated during 1992 to 1994 rainy seasons. The experiments were conducted in a split plot design, replicated 3 times at the Institute for Agricultural Research Farm, Samaru. The main plot treatments were factorial combinations of nitrogen and sowing date, while sub-plot treatments consisted of a combinations of 3 populations and two varieties (variety Local-1 and variety v-35). Date of sowing and nitrogen were found to influence the growth parameters. An increase in nitrogen levels increased the growth parameters including number of leaves, fresh weights of stem and roots, leaf area, leaf area index, and plant height. It also increased yield components and yield in all experiments. Populations and varieties were not consistent in their effects during the period of study. A delay in sowing reduced most of the growth parameters as well as yield components and yield. Correlation coefficient of growth parameters and yield components were found to be consistently close and positively correlated with the yield. Among factors studied, date of sowing is the most crucial factor affecting both vegetative characters and yield components, followed by nitrogen, population and variety. The adapted Local-1 cultivar, with a population of 22,000 plants/ha and at 90kgN/ha is optimum for production under Samaru conditions.
