EFFECT OF TELFERIA OCCIDENTALIS AND VERNONIA AMYGDALINA ON LIPID PROFILE (TOTAL CHOLESTEROL, TRIGLYCERIDE, HDL AND LDL) ON BRAIN, PLASMA AND KIDNEY IN HIGH SUCROSE DIET FED RATS
ABSTRACT
Sixty (60) albino rats of the wistar strain were used to investigate the effect different vegetables extracts modified diets; shared into two groups, one part fed with high sucrose diet while others were fed with normal ratchow. Lipid profile status were analysed in the plasma, brain and kidney after four weeks of feeding. The brain revealed a significant (p<0.05) decrease in triglyceride, LDL, HDL and Total cholestertol in rats fed with high sucrose diet only (HSO) while plasma revealed a significant (p<0.05) increase in triglyceride, LDL, HDL and Total cholestertol. However, the kidney revealed a significant (p<0.05) increase in triglyceride, LDL and Total cholestertol while HDL was significantly decreased (p<0.05). Therefore, moderate consumption of vegetable extracts with high sucrose diets can modulate lipid profile levels.
