AVAILABILITY AND UTILIZATION OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME IN TECHNICAL COLLEGES: AN IMPLICATION FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the availability and utilization of information and communication technology to enhance technical education programme in technical colleges for national development. Descriptive survey research design was employed and data were collected using researchers constructed questionnaire. Three research questions guided the study while three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Study population was 88 comprised of 64 male and 24 female technical teachers. The research questions were analyzed using descriptive mean and standard deviation while the null hypotheses were tested using Z-test at 0.05 significant level. Three experts from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State validated the instrument for the study. Reliability of the instrument was established with the administration of 20 copies of the questionnaire on technical teachers at GTC, Owerri, Imo State. Cronbach Alpha statistical technique was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument and it yielded a coefficient of 0.89. The findings reveled that ICT facilities like desktop computers, printers, laptop computers are available to very high extent while video recorder, interactive white book are available but to low extent. Also, only desktop computers, laptop computers and printers have very high extent utilization. The study further found that facilities are underutilized due to numerous challenges like incessant power outage, lack of teachers’ confidence in the use of ICT resources and lack of competent technicians for maintenance and repair of ICT gadgets. The study recommended employment and deployment of ICT experts to technical colleges for effective utilization of available ICT facilities, also training and retraining of technical teachers in the use of ICT facilities.
