PHYSICAL FLOOD VULNERABILITY OF RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES IN COASTAL SOUTHERN NIGERIA

Abstract

Coastal regions in Southern Nigeria face an increasing threat of flooding due to climate change and urbanization. This study examines the physical vulnerability of residential properties to flood hazards in the coastal areas of Southern Nigeria, with a focus on understanding the spatial distribution, characteristics, and factors contributing to vulnerability.

Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, the research combines Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, remote sensing analysis, and field surveys to assess the physical vulnerability of residential properties. GIS mapping is employed to delineate flood-prone areas, while remote sensing data aids in identifying land cover changes and patterns. Field surveys involve the collection of on-site data, including property elevation, construction types, and flood damage history.

The objectives of the study are to (1) map and analyze flood-prone areas in coastal Southern Nigeria, (2) assess the physical characteristics of residential properties exposed to flood risk, (3) identify factors contributing to the vulnerability of these properties, and (4) propose recommendations for mitigation and adaptation strategies.

The findings will contribute to the understanding of the complex interactions between physical vulnerability and flood hazards in coastal regions. The outcomes of this research can inform urban planning, policy development, and community-based initiatives aimed at reducing the physical vulnerability of residential properties to floods in Southern Nigeria.
