A REVIEW OF HISTORICAL CHURCH RE-FUNCTIONING OPPORTUNITIES IN WALLED-CITY FAMAGUSTA
Historical structures serve as witnesses to our cultural history and as reflections of our character and way of thinking. These structures need to be preserved and cared for since they have great conservation importance. Due to their symbolic significance, historical churches are extremely delicate monuments that must be transmitted to the next generation. Famagusta’s walled city contains a range of churches, from enormous cathedrals to little chapels. The historical churches of Walled-City Famagusta’s re-functionalization prospects are assessed in this thesis. Because they are located in a secular nation with a large Muslim population who do not use these churches for worship, the bulk of these churches remain inactive. Some of these churches have already been put back into use.
The purpose of the first chapter, Details on methodology, problem definition, and study limitations are provided. With examples from throughout the world, Chapter 2 provides general information about preservation of historical monuments and adaptive re-use of historical churches. The historical analysis and interior architectural space analysis standards of these churches are determined in Chapter 3. The conservation qualities of these historic churches are provided in detail by the historical study, and the architectural space analysis is also provided in detail. The historical and architectural analysis of churches that have been preserved is determined in Chapter 4. Data from sources and site analyses are used to populate the inventories. Additionally, this chapter covers the evaluation of the community survey conducted with residents and visitors from diverse origins. of these examinations. The suitable function recommendations for these churches are established in the conclusion based on the findings of the survey as well as analyses of the interior architectural space and historical space.
