CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This study on the impact f the learning environment on the teaching learning was carried out in four different schools namely: Egor Secondary School, Uwelu Secondary School and Evbareke Secondary School. This study takes a critical look at the impact of learning environment on the teaching learning performance of teachers and students in secondary school respectively.

It is a fact that is surrounding environment of students influences, their performance for example, the quality of the school building has the direct impact on students performance, students perform better in better academically in better building, researchers have found it that students in old building scored 5-7 percentage point lower than students in new building. It study on how various learning environment can affect the academic performance of students in school.

       We have various learning environments. These are;

–         The political environment;

–         The social environment;

–         The economic environment

–         The religious environment

–         The teaching learning environment.

The Political Environment: This is the government body  of the school for example the student union government (SUG).

The Social Environment: This is the culture institution and networks of individual or group in school.

The Economic Environment: This is the totality of economic factors such as employment, income, inflation, interest rate, productivity and wealth that influences the buying behaviour of customers in schools.

The Religious Environment: This is made up of various denominations in the learning environment today.

The Teaching Learning Environment: This is the classroom situation where by the students and teachers interact with each other.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

       The magnitude of environment problems on teaching and learning school is very difficult to determine because so many extraneous variables impinges on the teaching skills and learning capabilities of teachers and students in the classroom at different times. The time between learning environment and home environment is hard to define and varies from person to another.

OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

       The major objective or purpose of this study is to find out the effect of the learning environment on the academic performance of students in school in the selected schools.

       It is also finding out how the teachers and students are coping with their learning environment.

       To find out if the teachers and students have alternative means of teaching that problems associated with the learning environment.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1.  Is there any difference between learning environment and academic performance of students?

2.  Does social environment affect the academic performance of students?

3.  Does economical environment affect the academic performance of students?

4.  Does political environment affect the academic performance of students?

5.  Does religious environment affect the academic performance of students?

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

       It will enlighten student and teachers on how economic, political, social, religious environment could affect student’s performance.

       And it will also serve as a documentation of facts for historical purpose and records. Another importance of this research is t hat it serves as a literature for future research students and researchers.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

       Learning environment is the school compound itself, the classroom, the furniture and teaching materials. It include the time in hours spent in the school compound it also embraces the school surroundings.

Learning: this is gaining knowledge by studying practice or being taught in a school compound.

Teaching: to give instruction in any way to persons or groups in a school compound.
