A REVIEW OF EFFECT OF STRIKE ACTIONS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN BENUE STATE NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Strike actions have become a recurrent challenge in Nigeria’s educational sector, particularly in tertiary institutions. This study investigates the impact of strike actions on the academic performance of students in tertiary institutions in Benue State, Nigeria. The research explores the causes and frequency of strikes, including labor disputes over inadequate funding, poor working conditions, and delays in implementing agreements between the government and academic staff unions. It assesses the disruption caused by strikes to the academic calendar, the psychological effects on students, and the overall decline in educational standards. Using a combination of surveys, interviews, and academic performance data, the study evaluates the short-term and long-term effects on students’ learning outcomes, graduation rates, and preparedness for professional careers. Findings reveal that frequent strikes lead to academic disorientation, loss of study motivation, and deterioration in academic performance. The study recommends proactive government intervention, better communication between stakeholders, and the development of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to minimize the impact of strikes. By addressing the root causes, it is possible to create a more stable academic environment conducive to learning and growth.
