Family Background and the Academic Performance of Senior Secondary School

Abstract

This study investigated the Influence of Family Background on Academic Performance of Senior Secondary School Student’s in Jalingo Education Zone, Taraba State, Nigeria. To guide the study one research question and one hypothesis was formulated. The design adopted for this study was descriptive survey. The population of the study is 4,804 senior secondary II students in Jalingo Education Zone of Taraba State. Available data from Taraba State Post Primary School Management Board Jalingo

(TSPPSMB) revealed that there are 47 senior secondary schools in the Zone (Ministry of Education/Taraba State Annual School Census (TSASC), 2019). A sample of 480 from 21 schools was drawn randomly from the population. The sample size was determined using Krejcie and Morgan (1970) probability sampling table at 95% confidence level. Influence of family background on academic performance Questionnaire (IFBAPQ) was used for the collection of data. The instrument was constructed by the researchers and validated by three experts. A pilot study was carried out in two senior secondary schools of Gassol Education Zone. Cronbach alpha was used to ascertain the reliability and usability of the instrument which yielded a reliability index of r = 0.799. Data was analyzed using mean and standard deviation for the research question, while inferential statistics of Chi-square (X2) was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that family background such as: family type, (polygamous, monogamous and single parenting), family size (large number of family members), families with the history of divorce, low income within families that can’t afford extra mural lesson and school fees, family pitiable residential environment, poor feeding habit and poor family healthy life style affects students’ academic performance negatively. It is recommended that, Stakeholders (Parents, Parent Teachers Association (PTA), Government, Religious leaders, School Counsellors and Administrators) to work towards ensuring healthy academic rivalry among students and also enlightening parents on the need and commitment to family wellbeing and welfare of their children to improve their performance academically.
