FORWARDS MARKET GROWTH AND BANKING SECTOR GROWTH IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to establish the relationship between the growth of the forwards market in a growing banking sector in Nigeria. The study was carried out using cross-sectional and analytical survey design as well as descriptive methods used to interprete the findings. A sample of 90 staff of Bank of Nigeria and Commercial Banks were selected. Purposive sampling method was used to select the respondents for the study because of their involvement in the derivatives products at the operational, policy and regulatory levels. Self administered questionnaires were employed to collect data. The results showed that 56% of the variables contributing to forwards market growth were explained by banking sector growth variables. However, other significant contributors to forwards market growth were financial markets deregulation (45%), followed by financial market integration (11%), and knowledge and communication facilities (6%). Therefore for the forwards market to grow further, there is a need to promote financial markets deregulation and integration, better communication facilities as well as increased sensitization of stakeholders through educational and capacity building programs.
