A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF TlV AND ENGLISH VERBAL SYSTEMS.

ABSTRACT

The study tries to establish the extent to which the English and Tiv languages differ in their realisational patterns. It also highlights areas of similarities to stress the view that there is something universal about natural languages. Its first chapter treats the research problem which is an attempt at establishing whether or not a study of this nature has any practical and functional value. That is to say, it tries to determine whether or not the points at which the Tiv and English verbal systems differ, could be a source of difficulty to the Tiv learners of the former. It is also discusses the aims and objectives of the study, its relevance, scope and limitations, basic assumptions, research procedure and definition of concepts. The second chapter is a review of relevant and related literature on the Tiv verbal system with particular emphasis on the noun-verb symbiosis. It identifies eight verb classes for the Tiv language on the basis of tone and syllabic number and highlights the inextricable relationship the Tiv verb has with its eleven noun classes. The third chapter looks at the morphological structure of the English verb in terms of its inflectional suffixes and points out the absence of these allomorphic variants in the Tiv verbal system. The fourth chapter is a comparative analysis of the Tiv and English verbal systems from the point of view of their semantic structures. The fifth chapter is a summary and conclusion of the study. It also points out the very significant promise the study holds for the development of linguistic science on the one hand and the teaching and learning of English language on the other.
