THE EFFECT OF MOISTURE STRESS AT DIFFERENT GROWTH STAGES UNDER VARIOUS SEED RATES ON WHEAT (Triticum aestivum L.)
ABSTRACT
In order to study the effects of moisture stress imposed at different growth stages of wheat under various seed rates, a field trial was conducted at Ahmadu Bello University farm, Samaru, during the 1981/82 dry season with three levels of seed rate (75, 100 and 150 kg ha-1 ) and eight irrigation treatments consisting of normal irrigation at every ten days and missing one or two irrigation(s) at different growth stages. Withholding irrigation at any growth stage before anthesis reduced most of the growth characters. Missing two consectutive irrigations during early stages from crown root initiation (CRI) to jointing reduced most of the yield-related characters. Missing two consecutive irrigations at any stage reduced grain yield more than missing one irrigation. The maximum yield reduction levels of 13.3 and 65.4 percent were obtained when one irrigation was missed at CRI and when two consecutive irrigations were missed at jointing, respectively. A seed rate of 100 kg ha-1 was found to be the optimum for efficient water utilization in wheat
