SOCIO- ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF FACTORS AFFECTIN FARMERS’ PARTICIPATION IN LARGE-SCALE IRRIGATION SCHEME MANAGEMENT IN KANO RIVER IRRIGATION PROJECT (KRIP) PHASE 1.
ABSTRACT
This study examined the socio-economic factors affecting farmers’ participation in large-scale irrigation scheme management in Kano River Irrigation Project (KRIP) phase1. The objectives of the study were to: 1. describe the socio- economic characteristic of farmers in the study area. 2. identify the extent of farmers awareness of Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) activities. 3. examine the extent of farmers’ participation in the study area. 4. examine the relationship between the socio- economic characteristics of farmers and their level of participation in irrigation management 5. examine the benefits derived from farmers participation in irrigation management. Farmers (150) from six purposively selected irrigation communities from three local government areas were interviewed during the survey period from October to December 2003. The data collected were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. Results obtained from the analysis showed that the mean age of farmers in Kano River irrigation project phase1 was 42 years. Majority of the respondents could read and write in Ajami (an arabic writing system). The average household size was about 9 members. Most respondents acquired their farm land through inheritance while some farmers purchased. The respondents average farm size was about 1.5ha. Farmers were found to have 14 years of experience in irrigated agriculture. They seldom received extension visits and they are aware that irrigation management activities are not the sole responsibilities of the government. Also farmers in the study area were highly participating in farm operation, Water Field Canals (WFCs) and collector drain clearance among the aspects of irrigation management activities. Result of correlation analysis also showed that socio-economic characteristics such as years of experience in irrigated agriculture, awareness of participatory irrigation management activities and extension visits were significantly related to participation in irrigation management activities at 1 percent level, while land ownership patterns and farm size were significantly related to participation in irrigation management at 5 percent level. Multiple regression analysis revealed that these variables have a significant influence on farmers’ participation. However age and awareness of Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) activities made the greatest contribution. The benefits derived from farmers’ participation in irrigation management activities included conflict management among themselves, increased productivity, equity in water distribution, among others. It was recommended that more instruction publication and PIM concept should be made in Ajami. It was also advised that irrigation agencies should put more emphasis on facilitation and mobilization of farmers into social formation for effective and efficient participation in irrigation management activities. Moreover the government should overhaul the irrigation system and enforce law against any form of mismanagement or vandalization of the structures.
