IMPACT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING IN RURAL DEVELOPMENT; A CASE STUDY OF ADO EKITI

CHAPTER ONE:

  1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

This project discusses the significance of environmental planning in ado ekiti. The Garden of Eden was well planned that was why we never heard of chaotic situation. God definitely is the first Town Planner who created everything in an orderly manner. But ironically as man was given the power

to subdue the environment, man began to be fruitful, multiply on the surface of the earth and behold the activities have led to population explosion in

urban areas.

One of the most notable features of many Nigerian cities is the very disorderly nature of the cities. There has been a phenomenal growth of urbanization resulting in our major cities growing and expanding in an

unplanned manner. The central parts or core areas of most cities are decaying while the sections are increasingly becoming slums. Despite the existence of Local Planning Authorities whose portfolio includes development control of

urban land use, many buildings have been and are being constructed without approved layouts, illegal structures springing up arbitrarily, open spaces are disappearing fast and many parts of Nigerian cities lack access.

Compounding the problems is the alarming rate at which urban sprawl has been developing haphazardly. Many examples abound. Agbowo area in Ibadan and the new extension of the city at the right side of Lagos-Ibadan

express way are typical examples of such uncontrolled growth.

Almost all the urban centers are growing day-in-day-out with little or no systematic direction. The supply of sanitary and infrastructural facilities is increasingly becoming inadequate for the ever-teaming population influx into the urban centre. What proportion this build-up will reach in two or three decades ahead is anybody’s guess.

Therefore, with the political changes and administrative development of the action, these cities have continued to grow but at a rate faster than the types of facilities initially installed. The rapid population growth and physical

expansion of the cities have been accompanied by unplanned urban sprawl, environmental pollution, deterioration, deficiencies in modern basic facilities

such as water, electricity, hospitals, sewage, municipal and community facilities, and general urban decay. As increased urbanization exert more pressures on urban facilities, most Nigerian cities tend to have lost their precolonial original dignity, social cohesion and administrative efficiency.

1.2. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:

This project is on significance of environmental planning in ado ekiti area. There are is utter lack of planning in Nigeria cities and local government areas. Entire neighborhoods spring up with no plan for utilities and drainage. There are no areas set aside for commercial and residential purposes. Markets are not properly situated; banks, eateries and shopping plazas are allowed to spring up without proper parking space.

Once a road begins to take on pole position within a city, traders line both sides of the road with shops selling all manner of things usually ranging from electronics, clothing and provisions. The situation in our cities and local government areas is rather like a case of a flock of sheep without a shepherd, all wandering about aimlessly and in different directions and doing as they please.

1.3  PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

For a nation or country like Nigeria and its states to achieve its desired economic growth and development, proper environmental planning is very necessary. Moreover, once our respective local government areas and towns are well developed in a proper and fair manner, and following layed down policies, there will be a general development.

1.4  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The main beneficiaries of this study are the public, the accountancy firms, professional accounting bodies and government.

  1. Public: This study will enable the public appreciate the importance of environmental planning
  2. Government:  This study may show the necessity for government to review certain laws that hinder effective and properly implemented town planning. Besides, government will benefit from survival of effective environmental planning.

1.5 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

  1. The researcher intends to find out; the impact of environmental planning in effective planning and performance of the ado ekiti area.
  2. Whether the environmental planning operations are performed in compliance with the established standards and policies and how much it has succeeded in achieving the objectives.
  3. In the end the researcher shall establish some acceptable benefits that may be derived from effective environmental planning.

1.6   LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study has been limited by a number of factors. Notable among the limitations was our people’s poor reaction to researches question and reading meaning into any attempt at any form of interview.

It took the researcher much time and effort to convince some respondent that she is not in any way trying to find out how well or otherwise they are carrying out their work.

Also is the difficulty of assessing local government records of environmental planning of ado ekiti area.

1.7. RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS:

H0: Environmental planning has a significant impact in effective performance of the ado ekiti area.

H1: Environmental planning does not have a significant impact in effective performance of ado ekiti.

H2: There is a positive relationship between environmental planning and the effective performance of ado ekiti area.

H3: There is a negative relationship between environmental planning and the effective performance of ado ekiti area.

  1. RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
  2. Will environmental planning have a significant positive impact on the welfare and standard of living of the residents of ado ekiti area.
